Facts About Estimating

1. Ceramic tile is usually ordered in full cartons. Once the square footage of the job is determined, the estimator will round it off to the next full carton.

2. The sq. ft. of tile in a carton will vary from one product to another. Once the tile is selected the estimator will refer to the price list or label to find the sq. ft. per carton.

3. Trim pieces are ordered by the piece rather than carton.

4. It is necessary to increase the square footage of a job in order to compensate for breakage and tile cuts. Add 10% for tiles laid on square and 13% for tiles laid on diagonal or other patterns. The percentage can be less depending on the size of the job and the amount of cuts required.

5. It is customary to hold on to several pieces of tile to assure a perfect match, in the event future repairs are needed ... it is also a good idea to leave a half bag or so of grout. Just wrap it up in a plastic garbage bag.

6. Normal floor prep such as patching and moderate leveling are considered part of the job and are not charged for.

7. Major leveling can be charged for by the square foot or by the hour.

8. Most ceramic installers do not carry the tools necessary to stretch carpet. If the ceramic meets carpet in an area wider than a doorway, the service of a carpet installer will be required.

9. All toilets must be removed before tiling. It is very difficult and unprofessional to cut around a toilet ... all ceramic installers are experienced in removing and replacing toilets.

10. There are generally additional charges. These may include moving appliances, thresholds, trimming doors, surface preparation (eg. vinyl or carpet tear-up), special designs and layouts, and sealer.
